It seems like each country has a crime syndicate who insist on trying to insert a fake warnings in all social web platforms, forcing people to click on a link and download “free protection software” or “Microsoft updates”. When one country’s criminals realizes the profitability of these fake warnings has reached a limit, they seem to sell it to another country, who in turn tries to send the same warning to everyone again.
Today we came across Skype text message trying to convince users that their Microsoft machines are infected. Whether it is Skype or Yahoo! mail, these ‘phishing’ scams always ask for the same kinds of things:
- You are infected and you need to IMMEDIATELY DOWNLOAD THIS.. or
- You are infected and you need to IMMEDIATELY CLICK ON THE LINK… or
- “IMMEDIATELY contact me, send me money!!!!
They sound self assured and try to convince people to install software on their machine. Many times, they are programs that will automatically install themselves on your computer or server, and in turn download more powerful dangerous software. They do not need to ask for permission once the initial software was installed. Victims are empirically greater who use Internet Explorer on a regular basis.
