UPDATE: This number has now grown to 360,083 credit cards.
Citibank has not explained exactly how, but they have confessed that 200,000 names, email addresses and account numbers have been grabbed by a hacker. The GOOD news is social security numbers, date of birth, expiration dates and CVV numbers were NOT stolen.
Details of this is written up here.
When this kind of information is stolen, there is always a concern that the hackers will want your social security number if they can get it, so security officials look out for phishing emails that ‘confirm’ your social security number or date of birth.
Remember: No banking institution will ever request your private information confirmation by email. Be careful of ANY emails that look exactly like email from Citibank, which post your correct account number but not your correct date of birth or social security number.
