Without digging too deeply into all the technical reasons, Menlo Technology Consulting has been in the process of upgrading all ISP cable modems and gateways to benefit clients with new ‘cable Internet’ features giving faster speeds and increased security features. The specific upgrade is called DOCSIS v3. Look for it on the side of replacement modem manufacturer boxes. The modem manufacturer needs to post a certification mention on the side of the box, to actually gain the advantages of DOCSIS v3 .
Unfortunately, these enhancements are not available to DSL subscribers.
For many subscribers to cable Internet, a replacement cable modem or corporate gateway may be a simple swap procedure if your office leases the device. In this case, it would be a free swap. If you have purchased this device previously, you can buy a replacement at your local Fry’s or BestBuy, call the ISP technical support department BEFORE you upgrade. (Note: Be sure to deliver the old modem or gateway back to the cable operator IF have been leasing this device.)
Computers are being attacked more consistently and abundantly every day. This DOCSIS v3 standard will not prevent many common infections, but it is a better layer of defense and will increase security in the office more than the older DOCSIS standards. It will prepare the office for other upgrades that cable ISP’s have been rolling out and will continue to roll out in the future. The most notable change will be significant speed increases without needing to purchase a more expensive data plan. This is fantastic news for most offices that have been experiencing slowdowns on their computer networks just from bigger and web pages and more multimedia streaming into the office.
As a quick review of how DOCISS v3 devices can help the future of your business:
– Configured with Gigabit RJ45 connectors
– Can provision and offer IP multicast for improved video conferencing support
– VPN security enhancement by supporting AES encryption
– Supports ipv6 addressing
– Increased bi-directional speed standards for communication with the ISP, reducing latency and overall network traffic issues within the LAN and WAN segments
